For the first time, the Charms of Arctic Auroras festival offers a wide variety of events in Inari-Saariselkä tourism region from Kiilopää to Nuorgam on November 17-26, 2017.

Everyone is able to choose their favorite events from themes: culture, learning and nature experience. Events are organized by companies in the region.

Inari-Saariselkä Area – Top Places to Witness the Auroras

Inari-Saariselkä area is one of the top places on Earth to witness the Auroras, the Northern Lights. Locating some 250 km above the Arctic Circle, Inari positions right under the Aurora oval. For this reason, it is possible to see Aurora display almost every night from autumn until late winter, providing that it is dark and the sky is clear.

On average, the Auroras can be seen in the northernmost Lapland up to 200 nights a year, making the Inari-Saariselkä region an ideal place to host a festival of the Auroras.

“Together with the entrepreneurs in the region, we want to offer pure experiences of the Auroras for all senses. The northern lights are not only to be seen, but also to be tasted and heard”, explains the project coordinator Johanna Alatorvinen.

Life Changing Experiences

Scientifically talking this typical phenomenon of the polar region occurs when the electrically charged particles form the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere. But there is so much more than just science in it. For the locals, the Auroras have been a source of inspiration, mythology and legends for centuries. For the visitors, witnessing the Auroras can be a life changing experience.

Some even get hooked and never get enough of the blazing colors in the sky. French photographer Rayann Elzein has already spent 6 winters in Inari chasing the Auroras: “The reason why I come back each time is a combination of the fascinating Sami culture, friendliness of the locals and of course the regularity in which Auroras keep appearing and infinite possibilities to chase them.”

In the festival program, you can learn about Aurora photography, take part to various Aurora tours, Aurora dinners or to a cooking course. The Polar Night Jazz will bring together some of the best Finnish performers, local Sami artists and international guests from the Netherlands. For those interested in outdoor activities, Saariselkä Ski will open their season and Kiilopää hosts an early season cross country skiing event. If your dream is to escape to the wilderness, Hillagammi hideout in Nuorgam is the perfect spot for you.

Collect your events from the themes: Culture, Learn and Nature experience. Events are organized around the Inari-Saariselkä area from Saariselkä to Utsjoki.
