Thanks to the national parks and wilderness areas the bird population in northern Lapland is extremely diverse. In fact, the region is a real paradise for birdwatchers. From Saariselkä it is easy to start learning the species that inhabit the fell summits and riversides. Birdwatching hides can be found at Lake Ilmakkijärvi in Sodankylä, in Inari, along road No. 4 in Peurasuvanto and on the shores of Lake Sompiojärvi. The Arctic Ocean is only a three-hour drive away. From there a unique landscape opens up before the visitor, which boasts an unequalled bird population.
